Reality Capture / Aerial Photogrammetry

Aerial Photogrammetry

Aerial Photogrammetry uses overlapping high-resolution photographs and geospatial processing to produce georeferenced orthomosaics and 3D site models. Eagle scopes each collection around the capture area, accuracy requirements, and the outputs the project team needs.

What It Is

From Overlapping Images to Measurable Site Models.

Aerial Photogrammetry reconstructs three-dimensional geometry from overlapping high-resolution photographs. Specialized software identifies common features among the images and creates a georeferenced record that can be viewed, measured, compared, and incorporated into engineering and construction workflows.

Before mobilization, Eagle establishes the image coverage, flight altitude, airspace, georeferencing, and delivery requirements. The photographs are then aligned, processed, reviewed, and delivered through the agreed project workspace or in the required file formats.

Where required by the scope, Eagle uses ground control points (GCPs) tied to project control to establish the photogrammetric model. Separate independent ground verification/check shots—sometimes called ground truthing—may be used to evaluate accuracy without being used to build the model.

Image Coverage

Planned overlap creates consistent coverage across the capture area.

Geospatial Processing

Overlapping photographs are aligned and converted into georeferenced mapping products.

Online Project Review

Authorized users can view, measure, share, and coordinate from the processed imagery.

Best-Fit Conditions

Where Aerial Photogrammetry Adds the Most Value.

Open or Lightly Vegetated Sites

High-resolution mapping where the ground and visible surface features can be clearly photographed from the air.

Commercial & Industrial Developments

Georeferenced aerial mapping supporting due diligence, design coordination, construction, and documentation.

Construction Progress & Recurring Documentation

Recurring photogrammetry can support Eagle’s Construction Progress Monitoring and Documentation service by creating a consistent visual record over time.

Large Tracts, Subdivisions & Campuses

Efficient coverage across broad project areas requiring detailed visual context and surface information.

Earthwork & Stockpile Surfaces

Photogrammetric surface models can support earthwork and stockpile analysis when those calculations are included in the project scope.

Transportation, Utility & Site Corridors

Aerial imagery and surface coverage along visible roadway, utility, drainage, and site-development corridors.

Aerial LiDAR provides a higher degree of accuracy than aerial photogrammetry, which is one of the factors Eagle weighs when recommending a collection method. When a project requires both high-resolution visual context and bare-earth terrain beneath dense vegetation, Eagle can coordinate Aerial Photogrammetry and Aerial LiDAR Mapping within the same scope.

Typical Deliverables

High-Resolution Mapping, Organized for Project Use.

The project scope establishes the image resolution, coordinate system, accuracy requirements, project workspace access, processing workflow, and final deliverables.

Additional Photogrammetric Outputs

  • Digital Terrain Model DTM
  • Digital Surface Model DSM
  • 3D Photogrammetric Model
  • Contours

When ground visibility, control, and processing requirements support the intended use, the same collection may also produce terrain models, surface models, 3D models, and contours.

Our Process

From Flight Plan to Finished Mapping.

01

Define the Use & Outputs

Establish the capture limits, accuracy requirements, image resolution, coordinate system, project workspace needs, and final deliverables.

02

Plan the Flight

Set the image overlap and flight altitude, and review applicable FAA airspace, operating restrictions, authorization requirements, weather, physical access, and safety.

03

Collect & Process

Capture the overlapping photographs, align the images, and produce the orthomosaic and other scoped mapping products.

04

Review & Deliver

Complete quality control and provide the agreed project workspace and finished files established in the project scope.

Reliable photogrammetric products begin with precise flight planning, strong project control, consistent image quality, calibrated equipment, and disciplined processing. Eagle establishes the accuracy requirements and QA/QC procedures before collection begins.

Aerial Collection Capability

Aircraft and Flight Plan Built Around the Assignment.

Eagle operates eVTOL fixed-wing and multirotor UAS platforms, allowing the aircraft and flight plan to be selected around the required coverage, image resolution, terrain, access, and operating conditions.

eVTOL Large-Area Coverage

Eagle’s eVTOL fixed-wing platform supports efficient collection across large tracts and long corridors, with vertical takeoff and landing that does not require a traditional runway.

Multirotor Site Flexibility

Multirotor platforms provide flexible collection options where the capture area, access, or required geometry calls for a different aircraft.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Project Teams Ask About Aerial Photogrammetry.

How accurate is drone photogrammetry?

Accuracy requirements are established during scoping and carried through flight planning, project control, image quality, calibrated equipment, processing, and quality review. Eagle develops the control and QA/QC approach around the intended use of the finished products.

What is an orthomosaic?

An orthomosaic is a continuous, georeferenced aerial image assembled from overlapping photographs and corrected so it can be viewed at a consistent scale. It provides a detailed overhead record that can support measurement, planning, design coordination, construction documentation, and stakeholder review.

What can project teams do in DroneDeploy?

Depending on the scope, authorized users can review the orthomosaic, view geotagged photos, take distance and area measurements, navigate available 3D models, compare collection dates, and share approved deliverables with the broader team.

Can Aerial Photogrammetry support construction progress monitoring?

Yes. When recurring capture is included in the scope, photogrammetry can support Eagle’s Construction Progress Monitoring and Documentation service by creating a consistent, time-stamped visual record. Current conditions can be compared with earlier collections, reviewed alongside project plans, and shared with owners, contractors, engineers, and other participants.

When should Aerial LiDAR be used with Aerial Photogrammetry?

The two methods work well together when an assignment requires both high-resolution visual context and bare-earth terrain beneath vegetation. Photogrammetry provides detailed color imagery, while LiDAR contributes classified ground measurements and terrain modeling.
