Oblique measured stockpile surface with elevation contours and defined limits

Reality Capture / Volumetric & Stockpile Analysis

Volumetric & Stockpile Analysis

Eagle Surveying measures defined surfaces and reports geometric quantities for stockpiles, cut and fill, excavation, material inventory, and change over time. Depending on the project, collection may use aerial photogrammetry, LiDAR, conventional surveying, or a combination tied to project control.

Overview

Measure the surface. Define the basis. Report the quantity.

Volumetric analysis compares a measured surface to an agreed base, prior surface, or design surface. The result can be used to report stockpile quantities, cut, fill, net change, excavation, or other defined geometric volume measurements.

The calculation is only as useful as the basis behind it. Measurement limits, comparison surfaces, project control, collection date, and assumptions all matter.

Surfaces are tied to survey control and may be checked with independent ground verification/check shots—sometimes called ground truthing—based on the required accuracy, site conditions, and scope.

Stockpiles & Material Inventory

Measure a defined pile, material yard, or inventory area against the agreed base surface and measurement limits.

Cut, Fill & Existing vs. Design

Compare the current measured surface to a prior or design surface to report cut, fill, net change, or other agreed quantities.

Change Over Time

Repeat collection using a consistent basis so project teams can compare measured surfaces as earthwork or inventory changes.

Measurement Basis

The number depends on what is being compared.

Eagle reports measured geometric volume.

A volume is not just a property of the pile or the site. It depends on the measured limits and the surface used as the basis of comparison.

Shrink, swell, compaction, and other material-conversion factors are not determined by Eagle Surveying. Those factors are applied by the appropriate owner, contractor, estimator, engineer, or other project party.

Collection

Collection method follows the site and the quantity required.

Eagle selects the collection approach around site conditions, required coverage, project control, and the final measurement — not around one piece of equipment.

Aerial Photogrammetry

Well suited to large, open areas where visible surface conditions and high-resolution aerial imagery support the required measurement.

Aerial LiDAR Mapping

Used when terrain, vegetation, site conditions, or the required surface information make LiDAR the more appropriate collection method.

Conventional Surveying & Control

Supports project control, verification, targeted measurements, and areas where aerial collection is not the right tool.

Common Uses

Where measured quantities drive project decisions.

Volumetric work is most useful when the project team needs a defensible measurement basis — not just a picture of the site.

Earthwork Cut & Fill Tracking

Measured quantities for large grading, excavation, and fill operations.

Stockpile Inventory

Aggregate, soil, sand, and material inventory for contractors and operators.

Quantity Review

Supporting quantity information for subcontractor review and pay-application documentation.

Existing vs. Design

Comparison of current measured conditions to an agreed design surface.

Recurring Inventory

Repeat measurements for operational, financial, or project reporting.

Estimating & Planning

Measured existing-condition data that can support earthwork estimating and project planning.

Deliverables

Deliverables built around the quantity the project needs.

Not every project requires the same files. Eagle scopes the reporting and supporting data around the measurement, downstream use, and client requirements.

Volume Calculation Report

Measured geometric volumes for the defined stockpile, area, or surface comparison.

Cut & Fill Summary

Calculated cut, fill, and net change based on the agreed measurement limits and comparison surfaces.

Orthomosaic Reference

A georeferenced overhead image may be included when aerial imagery is part of the collection workflow.

Measured Surface Data

Digital surface information may be provided when it is part of the agreed scope and useful to the project team.

Recurring Comparisons & Project Access

Direct access when it helps the project team.

Repeat surface comparisons and hosted project access can be included when the assignment calls for ongoing review.

When included in the scope, Eagle can host applicable project data in DroneDeploy for client access and review of available project information and surfaces over time.

Volumetric FAQs

Volumetric & Stockpile Analysis FAQs

Volumetric and stockpile surveys use measured surface data to calculate cut, fill, net volume, stockpile quantities, or changes between surfaces. Eagle Surveying can collect the surface with aerial photogrammetry, LiDAR, conventional surveying, or a combination of methods. The resulting volumetric data supports earthwork tracking, material inventory, existing-versus-design comparisons, progress review, and quantity analysis.
